Oct 15, 2024 • Annual Dinner: Mark Dvorak’s “The American Folk Song”
Folk music enthusiasts will enjoy a treat as Bond County Historical Society and Bond County Genealogical Society present a concert by premier American banjo musician, Mark Dvorak. The societies’ annual dinner program is Tuesday, October 15, 2024 6pm at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church hall (512 S. Prairie St., Greenville).
The meal will be catered by Dirty Dan’s Meats & More and includes dessert. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Dinner tickets are $17 and will be available at the door. Historical society officers will also be installed for the 2024-2025 term prior to the dinner. The special concert program following is FREE.
At 7pm, following the dinner, attendees will be treated to a concert by Mark Dvorak, Chicago’s official troubadour. “The American Folk Song” is Mark’s signature presentation which examines the roots of American music through examples from African-American and British Isles traditions.
It features stories about growing up in the Chicago area, familiar folk songs, oral history, plenty of humor, standards from the Great American songbook and the music of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Lead Belly.
Mark Dvorak is Artist-In-Residence at Chicago’s venerable Old Town School of Folk Music, where he has been on faculty for more than twenty-five years. He is a modern day troubadour who has never stopped performing, writing and recording.
He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” with an “encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs.” His song writing has been described as “wondrous” and “profound.” Since 1981, Mark has performed in nearly all the United States and has visited several countries in Europe. Though he often appears on festival stages and in theaters, he is also at home in a more intimate setting.
